Imagine living in a place where simply believing in Jesus might cost you your home, your freedom, or even your life. This is the reality for many Christians in Nigeria today.
What’s really happening
In parts of northern and central Nigeria, Christian villages and churches have been attacked, families displaced, and entire communities silenced. Groups like Boko Haram and armed herdsmen militias have carried out kidnappings, killings and church burnings. The cost is huge: the loss of life, the loss of security, the loss of trust. Homes get burned. Parents are killed or taken. Children end up in orphanages. Churches are wrecked. And through it all, the Christian faith remains strong—but the suffering is real.
Why this matters to us
As believers, we’re connected. When one part of the Body of Christ suffers, it affects us all. These brothers and sisters are not just statistics. They are people with hopes, dreams, kids, chores—just like you and me. Their only “crime” often is being visibly Christian in a place where that brings danger.
How we can respond
Here are some ways you can partner with them, even from afar:
-
Pray: For safety, for comfort, for strength, for justice.
-
Raise awareness: Share credible info, talk about it in your community, your church, online.
-
Support organisations doing real work on the ground (see list below).
-
Stand for justice: At the very least, refuse to ignore their pain. Let your voice say, “I see you. You matter. Let’s do what we can.”
A word of hope
Even in the darkest valley, our faith tells us that God is with those who suffer. He does not abandon the oppressed. And while we may not be able to fix everything, we can show up, and we can care.
Let us remember: “Perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18). Caring-in-imperfect ways still reflects that love.
